In comparison to many other areas in the physical and natural sciences and engineering, environmental science and engineering are relatively new fields. Advances and modern environmental applications in science, engineering, and their related innovations have coalesced into a whole new way of seeing the planet in just a few decades. Science is concerned with the interpretation of the physical environment, while engineering is concerned with the use of science to accomplish goals. As a result, what we’ve learned about the environment through trial and error has gradually evolved into what is now accepted environmental science and engineering practice.
